Environmental Labels

To ensure high environmental quality of our products and keep consumers informed of such product quality, we are certified to use environmental labels and disclose information regarding such certifications. Here are overviews regarding the Eco Mark, EcoLeaf, Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP) and Type II self-declaration labeling that Fujifilm is certified to use.

Environmental Labels

Environmental labels are used to provide consumers with accurate information regarding environmental aspects of a product through the labeling on the product/package, technical reports and advertising. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) categorizes such labels into the following three types, specifying related standards.

Type I: Third party certification (ISO 14024)

This is environmental certification approved by third parties, based on their product classifications and judgment criteria.
Eco Mark labeling is such a certification employed in Japan, which approves the labeling to be used by an applicant through judgment by the Japan Environment Association. The mark is indicated on the approved product, promoting ecology-conscious consumers to select environmentally-conscious products.

Eco Mark shows that the product is designed in consideration of environmental conservation throughout its life cycle. It covers a wide range of product categories, specifying criteria for each of them. Eco Mark is the only Type I labeling in Japan, in accordance with the ISO standard. Type II: Self-declaration (ISO 14021)

This is self-declared labeling to demonstrate environmental quality of products, services and systems to the market. This does not require any third party’s verification. The labels are shown on products, instruction manuals, promotional items and CSR reports.

As the Type II labeling, Fujifilm uses the PLATE to PLATE mark. PLATE to PLATE refers to a recycling system in which scrap aluminum from CTP and PS plates used for lithographic printing is recycled to reproduce new plates. Participation in this system through collection or recycling of plates leads to effective use of resources and protection of the environment. The participating or cooperating companies are allowed to use the PLATE to PLATE mark.

Through the closed-loop recycling of aluminum (recycling with minimum quality degradation), we aim to contribute to resource saving, energy conservation and CO2 reduction that lead to recycling-based society and reduced environmental burden.

[Logo] Type II: Self-declaration (ISO 14021)

Type III: Environmental labels and declarations (ISO 14025)

This is labeling for disclosure of quantitative environmental impact data based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The aim of Type III labeling is to help consumers' decision on green purchase/procurement through information disclosed via Internet and other media. It is also aimed at encouraging a company to fully understand such quantitative data, motivating them to further reduce environmental impact.

EcoLeaf environmental labeling is managed by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry. It uses the LCA method to provide the product's information regarding environmental impact such as global warming, acidification, ozone depletion and water pollution as well as consumption of resources such as energy and minerals. The quantitative data covers the entire life cycle of the product, ranging from the production to disposal and recycling phases. This labeling falls in ISO 14025 Type III environmental labels. Carbon footprint (ISO/TS 14067)

A carbon footprint is a measure of greenhouse gas (GHG) emitted throughout the life cycle of a product or service, ranging from (1) raw materials procurement, (2) production, (3) distribution and sales, (4) use by consumers and (5) disposal and recycling. The data is calculated in CO2 equivalent to make the amount of GHG understood easily.
In Japan, a pilot project regarding the carbon footprint, implemented by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, was completed in March 2012. The project has now been turned into a full-scale program named CFP Communication Program and managed by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry.
